Of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) in distinguishing clients with mild cognitive impairment from normal elderly clients (Nasreddine et al., 2005). It was developed in response to the poor sensitivity Sensitivity refers to the probability that a diagnostic technique will detect a particular disease or condition when it does indeed exist in a patient (National Multiple Sclerosis Society). Instrument for the detection of mild cognitive impairment. ![]() ![]() Finally, we provide our clinical opinion on the future role of psychiatrists in AD, the education and training necessary to fulfil this role, interactions between psychiatrists and other specialists as part of a multidisciplinary team, and the potential for routine screening of cognitive function among elderly people. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) was designed as a rapid screening Testing for disease in people without symptoms. We also briefly describe current and emerging pharmacological treatments for AD that target amyloid and tau and that may modify disease progression. We summarize some of the key instruments used to assess cognition and the neuropsychiatric and be-havioral symptoms that often accompany early AD, neuroimaging diagnostic tools, and newly available AD-specific biomarkers that enhance the ability of clinicians to diagnose early AD. This narrative review describes the current and future role of psychiatrists in the diagnosis and management of AD, focusing on the DSM-5 criteria for mild and major neurocognitive disorder. The concept of " mild neurocognitive disorder " or " mild cognitive impairment " promotes early detection and diagnosis of AD, particularly by psychiatrists, who often consult the DSM-5. In the recent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the terminology related to AD has shifted from " dementia " to major or mild " neurocogni-tive disorder ", emphasizing the cognitive impairment that occurs relatively early in the disease process. The number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) is expected to increase substantially in the near future. The prevalence of depression in the elderly ranges from 0.5 to 16o: A Depression is a heterogeneous mental disease classified as a set of disorders, which manifest with a certain duration, frequency and intensity. The normative data of the 7MS obtained in a representative sample of the general elderly population support its rigorous use in the Spanish clinical setting.ĪBsTrAcT. We present the mean values, –1 and –1.5 standard deviations, range and per-centiles of the partial and total scores of the 7MS stratified by age (71-75, 76-80, 81-85 and ≥ 86 years) and education (less than primary education and primary education or greater) in the subgroup of non-demented subjects. The easiest and most efficient method to obtain the total score of the 7MS was the sum of the z-scores of the four subtests. Several methods to obtain the total score of the 7MS were analyzed and the normative parameters of the test were obtained in the subgroup of non-demented subjects. De-mentia was diagnosed according to DSM-IV criteria but independently of the 7MS scores. In order to do so, we used an extensive clinical survey, general and neurological exam and extensive neuropsychological battery with several cogniti-ve scales, attention, language, memory, visuomotor skill and reasoning tests, Jorm's IQCODE questionnaire, CES-D depression questionnaire and the 7MS including the Benton Orientation Test, Clock Drawing Test, Free and Cued Learning Test and Categorial Verbal Fluency. We examined 416 persons, living at home, participating in elderly the longitudinal study «Aging in Leganes», aged 71 to 99 years old (mean age: 79 ± 9.2 years 51.7 % women 10.6 illiterate, 25 % without formal education). To standardize the Spanish version of the 7 Minute screening neurocognitive battery (7MS) in a population sample of elderly over 70 years.
